Xie Lao Song (蟹老宋)
$16.00

Call me old fashioned, but I'm quite averse to having Chinese food in the stereotypical 'Chinatown' spots surrounded by tourists. However, despite being located on Smith Street, Xie Lao Song is ridiculously authentic - most of the clientele and staff are very Chinese (and a lot don't even speak much English).

The food here is traditional and great - with the ma la xiao long xia (spicy crayfish) being the main attraction. Of course, being a Sichuan restaurant means they should also have laziji, and the dish here definitely lives up to the hype. Not as crispy as most other places, but the texture of the chicken and flavor combines to make it very delicious.

  • Another version of the dish that is quite different than the rest, Xie Lao Song's laziji is neither super crispy nor terribly spicy. Although that sounds uncharacteristic of the dish, the overall texture and flavor combine to yield a fantastic taste that makes me torn between which version I prefer. Highly recommended and my guests love it as well.
