Hawker Stalls @ Golden Mile Food Centre
$5.00

Hawker Centres are a signature part of Singaporean food, and the Golden Mile Complex has the benefit of having a few great food courts within a short walk. The biggest of these is just across the street - the Golden Mile Food Centre is a 2-storey haven for hawker lovers, containing every imaginable food or drink option from traditional Singaporean stalls, western stalls, juice stalls, and even pastry/dessert stalls. The variety is amazing and well beyond many other hawker centres I've visited, and of course the prices are great compared to restaurants - you'll be fully satisfied on a $5-10 budget.

  • On the 2nd storey of the hawker centre is a juice stall called Shiok Naturals (on the corner closest to the bathrooms). They have a load of various smoothie options combining fresh fruits to create unique flavors, at usually $2.50 a pop. My favorite is the strawberry & peach smoothie, which has warranted many trips to the Golden Mile Hawker Centre - even when we already ate lunch elsewhere.

  • There is a little mini-hawker centre right next to the main 2-storey one, which houses a couple of stalls in a less crowded and hectic environment. One of these is an economical rice stall which always has my favorite dishes such as fish, crispy chicken, tofu, and leafy veggies. The food is always great, the servings are generous, and the price only runs about $4.50 - $5.50 depending on what you order.

  • I was amazed when I saw that there was a stall selling Portuguese egg tarts here. It is hard enough finding a place serving this favorite dish of mine in Singapore, and to have one in a hawker centre - across the street from my office at that - was truly exciting. Unfortunately, it wasn't as crispy nor flavorful as I was hoping for. I'll need to revisit sometime to see it was perhaps a one-off batch.

  • The western food stall in the middle of the 2nd floor is quite good (the one closer to the CBD, as there are 2 right across from each other). Roughly $6-8 depending on what you order, the lamb and chicken are both good.
