04. Yakitori @ Omoide Yokocho

On our first night in Japan, we accidentally stumbled upon Omoide Yokocho, a cosy walking street littered with dozens of tiny yakitori stalls packed with locals and the occasional tourist. We spent a few minutes scouting out which ones looked the best (and, more importantly, had an English menu) and chose one. After a few rounds, we decided that one venue wasn't enough and proceeded to another for seconds! Definitely a highlight of the trip.

  • It didn't take long for us to decide that trying one stall wasn't enough - we simply had to try out different places as each one is so different from the other.

  • There are dozens of yakitori stalls and each one is super narrow. Barely enough to sit down let alone walk through to your chair. The atmosphere is super cosy and communal though, and the patrons seem to be mostly locals, which is a good thing.

  • Shin Kuishiya in Singapore is a decent alternative, though I still crave Omoide Yokocho every time I see yakitori - nothing has been able to compare with the taste and experience
