Aaron & Xixi's Japan Trip 2014

Aaron & Xixi's Japan Trip 2014

Xixi and I booked a last-minute trip to Tokyo for our 2 year anniversary and my birthday, which turned out to be amazing. We got the chance to fly First Class & Suites, met up with fantastic friends who brought us to all sorts of wonderful places, and of course got in a ton of shopping and - most importantly - eating!

We started off in The Private Room - Singapore Airline's private lounge for First Class passengers only. It was so exclusive and luxurious, with great service and an awesome selection of free food. Oh and who can forget - CHAMPAGNE!!!

Our next surprise - times two - came as we boarded the plane. First off, we got the brand new Boeing 777-300ER plane which features the latest First Class offering (only 3 in the entire SQ fleet). Secondly, we were the *only* passengers in First Class. 8 seats and 3 flight attendants, all to ourselves!

We got awesome Ferragamo amenity kits - also a new offering on SQ - which were great. There was a male and female version, but both of us wanted the male bag as it was much nicer. It also includes a rather large (50ml?) bottle of cologne / perfume which was very handy after an overnight flight.

Lights out! Our beds in the sky - perfect for a great rest on a redeye flight to recharge before hitting Tokyo at full speed with an 8 am arrival.

Pre-arrival meal. We both booked the cook to ensure we got what we wanted. Xixi had the Kyo-kaiseki while I opted for the lamb chops, which were the best I've had since coming to Singapore. If only there was a restaurant that served 'chops like these!

  • 04. Yakitori @ Omoide Yokocho

Shin Kuishiya in Singapore is a decent alternative, though I still crave Omoide Yokocho every time I see yakitori - nothing has been able to compare with the taste and experience

The vending machine to place and pay for your order. Pretty easy to figure out with the prices and photos

The dining area - a narrow hall of individual cubicles all sectioned off to give privacy. Don't expect to have a romantic face-to-face dinner date here

Each individual cubicle has its own water tap, which is nice. Your bowl of ramen will come out of the 'window' partition when ready, after which they'll close it to let you eat in peace.

If you really like the food - or want to take some home as gifts so your friends and family can try - they offer box sets to take away as well. It only comes with the noodles and broth ingredients, so you'll need to provide your own meat and toppings.

  • 02. Shopping @ Shibuya 109

Shibuya crossing in the wee hours, before the ambush of pedestrians and cars alike.

Shibuya crossing - one of the most famous in the world. It gets crazy crowded with people crossing the street in every direction.

  • 04. Yakitori @ Omoide Yokocho

There are dozens of yakitori stalls and each one is super narrow. Barely enough to sit down let alone walk through to your chair. The atmosphere is super cosy and communal though, and the patrons seem to be mostly locals, which is a good thing.

  • 05. Crepes @ Harajuku 原宿

The two famous crepe stalls - Angels Heart and Marion Crepes - are literally right across from each other. The pricing, selection, and taste was pretty much the same for us. But try both out anyways - who doesn't love a good crepe?

Both stalls have elaborate displays of the crepes so you can choose exactly what you want.

Xixi found the fashion at Harajuku to be a little too over-the-top cutesy, but the convenience stores had boat loads of unique makeup and accessories which made for great gifts

  • 06. Amazing Sushi @ Ootanino

The setting is simple and unique. Nothing too fancy other than hand-picked serving plates, the focus is on the food. Oh, and this is the size of the entire dining area other than 2 more seats to the right. It is the definition of intimate and exclusive.

Each course, such as this prawn sashimi, was prepared incredibly fresh. One moment the prawns were swimming about in a bowl, and literally under a minute later they were in our mouths.

Watching the meticulous precision of the chef was mind boggling, it really makes one appreciate how seriously the Japanese take their food. And the effort pays off as well - the taste is like no other we had ever experienced.
