Jalan Besar is my local neighbourhood and is increasingly being described as the up-and-coming area in Singapore. This is a list of my favourite venues in the area.
Fantastic coffee shop and brunch venue which sits inside this old hardware store. Really modern and clean layout inside with a large outdoor space into which customers can overflow.
Excellent microbrewery which sits on the main stretch of Jalan Besar. They usually have three of their home-brewed beers on tap alongside a couple of imported guest ales.
Great little venue which is famous for its delicious hamburgers and has a good cocktail menu. It is a little hidden from the street despite sitting at ground level and is located within the Kam Leng Hotel.
Prides itself on the broad choice of craft beers which it serves up on tap. Neatly tucked away in an old Chinese Druggist Association building which certainly adds to the charm and allure of discovering what's inside.
Really cool venue with a nice open air feel, it is a converted garage after all. They serve Japanese themed food and Kirin beer to wash it down. Subtle mood lighting so makes for a good date spot.
Open from 6pm to 6am everyday of the week bar Tuesdays. This is the place to go for some much needed sustenance in the early hours after a night on the tiles.
From a distance it looks like a petrol station. Up close, it is very much a bottle shop and relaxed bar which forms a unique setting for a couple of drinks when the sun goes down.
