  • Egg Waffle [雞蛋仔]

They have way too many hipster variations these days, so let's stick to the basic. Well, kind of. I like my 雞蛋仔 (gai dan zai) chocolate-flavored!

It's a favorite pre-dinner snack. Well, I only really have it when I'm waiting for John to get off work. There's one right around the corner from where he lives.

  • Cha Chow [茶走]

This is essentially the HK style milk tea with condensed milk added for sweetness (as opposed to sugar).

The Cantonese name for it is "Cha Chow" [茶走], which literally translates as "tea go". The origin of this that, decades ago, some 'foodies' feared that adding sugar to milk tea would cause phlegm (erm, ew). They would ask for the sugar to not to be added, and to be replaced with condensed milk instead. Apparently, condense milk does NOT cause phlegm.

I don't always drink milk tea, but when I do drink milk tea, I drink 茶走.

  • Instant Noodles with Egg & Spam [餐蛋公仔麵]

My parents never let me eat much of this growing up. I mean, have you heard what happens inside your stomach when you eat instant noodles? This shiz was like candy. The less I could have it, the more I wanted it. My mom would only let me eat this as a treat. As simple as this dish is, it was my "reward" food (much like Mcdonalds and all candy). So it became a home-comfort-reward food, a real pick-me-up.

When I went abroad for uni and had to cook for myself, this was my homesick-food choice.

When people ate kebabs after a night out, this is my go-to choice (yes, I'd cook after a night out).

When I go home after a super late night at work, I eat this to comfort myself.

Fried egg and spam are just the basics.

NOTE: If given the choice, just pay that extra $ premium for some Nissin (出前一丁). It beats that Doll bullcrap any day.

  • Condensed Milk Toast/Bread [奶油多/奶油包]

    Ermagah.

This is a lovely breakfast or snack to have from any cha chan teng or dai pai dong. It's basically condensed milk and butter on toast/bread. That golden, sweet, thick and creamy goodness.

Here are some other toast combos you could try:

    - Condensed milk & Peanut Butter [奶醬多]
    - Butter & Jam [油占多]
    - Jam & Peanut Butter [占醬多]
    - Kaya [咖吔多]

If you get the choice to choose wheat & raisin bread [麥包], go for it. Gives it that extra kick of a texture. Mmmm.

  • Spam & Egg Rice [餐蛋飯]

So this is a lunch-time favorite for me. It is the ultimate comfort food for lunch. I've managed to find a pretty good place to have it in Central. It's in a dai pai dong at the very end of Stanley Street.

When the eggy yolk breaks and you mix the rice with it along with some soy sauce...When the spam is fried to a light crispy texture...

So much joy out of such a simple dish.

  • Chicken Pie in Pea Soup

This is a strange one, I know. But it doesn't taste as strange as it looks.

Green pea soup is something my mom would make once a blue moon. It's the ultimate comfort soup for me.

Chicken pie? Omg. How could you not want to eat that crust?

You can get this at Matchbox Cafe (a cha chan teng).
