The truth about Geylang

The truth about Geylang

Living in Geylang is the latest trend...(I should know - I lived there) - but what can you actually do there?

  • Beef Kway Teow

    Lorong 9, Geylang
This is one of my fave dishes in Singapore and the best place to find it is Lorong 9 in Geylang. There are lots of different stalls selling slightly different versions of it, but I haven't had a bad one yet

  • Frogs, Durian and Turtles

    Geylang
The bad, the worse and the ugly...the things to avoid in Geylang...

Lorong 9 is home to fresh frog porridge. You can even pick your own frog from the tank in front of the restaurant. This truly makes me gag. Indeed I'm having that response as I write!

Likewise with Turtle Soup, which can be found at The Turtle House, alongside Crocodile and other unmentionables.

Durian - the most offensive smell in Singapore - can be found in the shops that line Geylang Road. I walked past this every day. It made me sad.

All of the above are of course perfect for thrilling overseas guests

A fully fledged restaurant that originates from a hawker stand, expect yummy crab and other seafood.Singaporean White Pepper Crab was born here and remains a signature must-try dish. Make sure you dine outside - it's buzzing road side crab

Reservations are recommended and note that the water and towels are not free!

  • Old Airport Road Food Centre

    51 Old Airport Road, Geylang
Arguably one of the best (and oldest) hawker centres in Singapore. Indeed voted the best in ieatishootipost's hawker centre polls. Here you can buy local and authentic food for next to nothing. Look out for Kway Teow, Hokkien Mee and Rojak. Apparently it's best known for Soya Beancurd - I can't substantiate this as it's up there in my least favourite foods in Singapore!

  • Sen Restaurant and Wine Bar

    704 Geylang Road
SEN is a vietnamese restaurant which serves good quality French wines alongside its food. The menu ranges from Fresh Summer Rolls, Pho and soups. Wines range from Prosecco (clearly a winner), to Merlots and Sauvingons.

The staff here are lovely, the interiors are funky and it's good value for money.

  • Thai to Go

    Guillemard Road
Ever wanted a quiet night in with takeaway Thai? The good news...the best Thai takeaway joint is in Geylang! It's called Thai To Go and their Lemon Chicken is delicious

    Dins and Beer
    403 Guillemard Road
This is the best bar (in my humble opinion) in Geylang. This communal social space is the perfect space for a few beers (craft no less) and fusion food later in the evening. The decor is trendy, it's open plan and you're right on the river. The Claypot rice-otto is delicious!
