The Best La Zi Ji (辣子鸡) in Singapore

The Best La Zi Ji (辣子鸡) in Singapore

La Zi Ji (辣子鸡), aka spicy fried chicken, is one of my favorite Chinese dishes ever. Here are some of the best places I've tried in Singapore.

  • Fat Bird (胖胖鸡) $12.00

1 Liang Seah Street, #01-15/16, Singapore
Fat Bird on Liang Seah Street is a place I love bringing my friends, not just for the great Chongqing food, but also the cool atmosphere and vibe of the restaurant & area. While the main attraction here is the spicy chicken pot - which is awesome in its own right - the laziji here is also fantastic and at a very reasonable price.

  • Xie Lao Song (蟹老宋) $16.00

    16 Smith Street, Singapore 058930
Call me old fashioned, but I'm quite averse to having Chinese food in the stereotypical 'Chinatown' spots surrounded by tourists. However, despite being located on Smith Street, Xie Lao Song is ridiculously authentic - most of the clientele and staff are very Chinese (and a lot don't even speak much English).

The food here is traditional and great - with the ma la xiao long xia (spicy crayfish) being the main attraction. Of course, being a Sichuan restaurant means they should also have laziji, and the dish here definitely lives up to the hype. Not as crispy as most other places, but the texture of the chicken and flavor combines to make it very delicious.

  • Si Chuan Duo Hua (四川豆花)

Park Royal, 7500 Beach Road, Singapore 199591
This restaurant is a lot fancier than the other options in the list, but sometimes a nicer setting is appropriate. The food here is of great quality and the service and ambience certainly matches it. The laziji is very well executed, with the right mixture of crispy and flavorful, though I feel some would find the spiciness a bit overpowering - I'm sure you can ask for to be a bit less spicy though. Overall I'd highly recommend Si Chuan Duo Hua for a fantastic meal, though given the setting you're probably unlikely to come just for the laziji.

  • Paradise Dynasty (乐天皇朝) $12.00

2 Orchard Turn #04-12A, ION Orchard, Singapore 238801
When I want good Sichuan food in a slightly classier setting, Paradise Dynasty at Ion Orchard is always my first thought. The laziji here is perhaps my favorite in flavor - fairly crispy but not overly fried, and with a hint of sugar to take the edge off some of the spiciness. The $12 price point is also very reasonable given that the restaurant is quite classy compared to other Sichuan venues.

Other dishes here are also very good. I'd suggest avoiding peak hours unless you want to queue 30+ minutes.

In addition to their ION Orchard branch, they also have outlets at Lot One, Causeway Point, Westgate, VivoCity, and Changi Airport T3.

  • Chongqing Grilled Fish (重庆烤鱼) $14.00

1 Liang Seah Street #01-05/06, Singapore
Just down the street from Fat Bird, Chongqing Grilled Fish trades the signature chicken pot for a signature grilled fish. The laziji here is very similar to its sibling at Fat Bird - I believe the management is related as well. As expected, it is very crispy and flavorful.

In addition to their Liang Seah branch, they also have outlets at 18 Mosque Street #01-01 and No 45 Lorong 27 Geylang.
