Everybody knows Big Ben, the British Museum and copious amounts of shopping with the crowds at Oxford Street. Scratch that. We like to spend our weekends exploring the other sides of London you don't see on most travel guides.

  • Borough Market

    Easily my favorite food market of all time. From burgers to gluten-free sweets to grilled scallops served piping hot with bacon in its own shell... Borough has everything to take your tastebuds to heaven and back. It's hard to pick favorites, but I love the ostrich burger, the raclette/grilled cheese stand (your nose will lead you to a hold crescent of bubbly gold) and tarts from Dark Sugars.

  • Brick Lane

    Hipster central! But Brick Lane also has an amazing selection of cool vintage stores, a smorgasbord of ethnic food stalls and of course the Sunday Upmarket. I especially love the Sunday Upmarket because you can find many cool up-and-coming designers there offering their wares who love nothing more than sharing their design vision and aspirations with you.

  • Chinatown

    I know some people will say this is touristy, but hey I'm Asian so I have my license to go to Chinatown as many times as I want! And it never gets old if you know where to go. I love Old Town 97 for off-the-menu awesomeness (ask for LSE rice - you will thank me later), the green door bakery for Chinese breads, tarts and pastries, and the Chinese supermarkets for Asian snacks like Pocky and Hello Panda.

  • Columbia Road Flower Market

    Blooms blooms blooms everywhere! This is the BEST place to score fresh flowers, ferns, trees and all forms of shrubbery at unbeatable prices. I know I was dying to buy every single bunch of hydrangea and every single stalk of lavender I saw. If you go late on the weekend at around 5pm, prices are slashed even more because everything-has-to-goooooooo!

  • Greenwich

    We were too cheap to pay to go see the Meridien Line but hanging around Greenwich Park is awesome on weekends. Go for a run, pack a picnic basket or just sit on the grass and gaze out at the Isle of Dogs... It's such a chilled out place to be at. We also loved the little cafes we found along the way, and Cutty Sark's just nearby too if anyone's interested in maritime stuff.

  • Hampstead Heath

    Loads of quaint little shops and cafes, and tons of cool cottages for the viewing too. You can trek through the massive Hampstead Park (wear good walking shoes - it's pebbly) and take the dog for a nice run through the fields. The highlight of Hampstead Heath has always been the crepes at La Creperie de Hampstead, a little stand along the high street, which offers amazing sweet and savory gems bursting with calorific flavor and decadence. I especially love the simple butter sugar crepe (ask for a splash of Grand Marnier - it makes all the difference) and for savories, try the mushroom and garlic cheese crepe.

  • Kenwood House

    If you walk through Hampstead Park, there is a heritage site called Kenwood House with an insight into Victorian living, pomp and circumstance. There is an impressive collection of paintings that the estate manages and displays, and it's a great peek into the days of Lords, Ladies, Counts and Countesses. In the springtime, the gardens also boast amazing blooms definitely worthy of a walk through.

  • Regent's Canal

    We walked from Limehouse in the Canary Wharf area on the east side all the way to Islington/Angel in the north. Things to look out for: cool barges moored along the canal, ducklings, tons of greenery and even a floating bookstore barge. You can even stop for coffee at some of the barge cafes along the way. We rewarded ourselves with a nice brunch at Elk in the Woods at Islington and then explored the small but very cool enclave of stores and cafes nearby. The whole walk took us slightly less than 2 hours.

  • The Limehouse Cut Canal Walk

    We kept eastside one weekend and walked from Limehouse along the canal to Hackney Wick, where there are many nice cafes and hipster spots to check out. Along the canal there are little communes that sprout up suddenly (we saw people planting their own vegetables!) and also had a cuppa at the Plough at Swan Wharf, a cool No-Tories cafe that serves some pretty good grub. After Hackney, we efore branched out into Victoria Park, which is an amazing place to visit when the weather is good. So much green and so much space to do whatever you want. We ended off with lunch at People's Park Tavern, a pub with a massive garden perfect for lounging around in springtime. Their fries were awesome!
