How to find Programmers in Singapore

You've got an amazing idea, a huge target market, maybe even an MVP that people love - great! Now you need programmers to further develop the product, but how do you find them? Here are some online and offline options for startups in Singapore to find developers.

A good friend of mine put me in touch with The List shortly after I joined the startup scene in Singapore. I've been to a couple of their events which provide an excellent means for networking. Like all such events, it can be tough to find exactly what you're looking for on the technical side of things but well worth checking out.

I have no technical knowledge and went into HubPortal looking for a developer, expecting to give up cash or equity to create my site. I connected with a programmer who was also at The Hub Singapore and after a quick conversation found out I could just use Wordpress/Squarespace to do it myself! They helped me get started and now we're great friends sitting next to each other :)

The quickest and simplest port of call when looking to find a developer who might be able to help out. Also a great way to introduce yourself and your concept to the Hub's community.

  • Fiverr

My PHP website had a bug that wasn't letting users log in for some reason and my freelancer was on holiday, so I tried out Fiverr. I went for the cheapest option - a random guy for $5 who had decent but not great reviews - and he got the job done, though took 1.5 days to respond. Look into the reviews next time so you know what you're getting.

What better place to look for talent than within our own community! I searched HubPortal and found a few developers that were interested in helping out other startups, and guess what - 2 of them were no more than a few seats away! We were able to catch up and start working immediately.

I went to a few events which were really cool and met a lot of awesome people. However most of them had specific themes or purposes and I didn't find many programmers that were looking for jobs. Nevertheless, it was great for networking and getting to know the various industries better!

I wanted a company logo and had no idea where to start since I don't know photoshop. I found someone specialising in retro logos that I liked, and they also had good reviews. $5 and a few emails later I have a cool logo.

I spent a few hours trying to make (seemingly) simple tweaks to my Wordpress blog template and decided to try out Fiverr. The ratings & reviews were really useful to choose freelancers, and I got a response within an hour! The guy was really skilled and fast and I had the option paying an extra $5 to get it done within 24 hours (instead of 3 days). So $10 total to fix everything I wanted within the same day - a really good deal!
