Sri Lanka Trip - November 2015

Sri Lanka Trip - November 2015

I'd been meaning to visit Sri Lanka ever since an old colleague in London told me about the most fabulous family trip he'd embarked on to Sri Lanka shortly after the long running civil war came to a conclusion in 2009. A great mate of mine now lives in Kandy and proved to be the perfect travel accomplice for the ten day trip. Needless to say, I was blown away by how beautiful Sri Lanka is and how friendly the locals are to visitors throughout the country.

  • Ashburnham Tea Estate $125.00

Ashburnham Estate Dr, Elkaduwa, Sri Lanka
    Double
Set in the hills to the North East of Kandy, this 1920s tea estate is a slice of heaven on earth. Sitting 800m above sea level, it is wonderfully located and boasts its very own private waterfall which is no less than 50 feet of cascading fresh water. Run by a lovely English couple, it is very comfortable, has a delightful pool and slide, and some of the best views you're likely to come across from a veranda in Sri Lanka. The wildlife in this region is beautiful and I highly recommend a hike with the resident naturalist. A great place to unwind, read a book, take in the stunning scenery, eat delicious food, and drink endless pots of home grown tea!

  • Secret Surf Spot - South Coast

This little cove is too good to name so I won't do so here. Needless to say, it picks up the majority of any swell heading towards Sri Lanka from the Southern Indian Ocean. Depending on swell size, direction and tide, there is a left had point break which breaks over relatively shallow rocks (watch out for sea urchins on these!), there is an A-frame wave in the center of the cove which provides a more consistent left than right, and there is a right hand point on the other side of the cove which only really works on big swells.

  • Kikili House - Galle $100.00

32 Lower Dickson Road, Galle 8000, Sri Lanka
    per night
One of the most fun bed and breakfasts you're ever likely to stumble across. Hen and Koki are the warmest and most welcoming couple. The interior is colourfully decorated and you can quite literally spend hours taking in all the wonderfully quirky touches that make this place so special. The breakfast is fantastic and should never be missed, think fresh coconut water, juices, tea, coffee, toast, poached eggs, granola etc. As a testament to what Hen and Koki have been able to achieve, this bed and breakfast attracts a fascinating base of travelers who will keep you entertained and interested throughout. A book could very easily be written on the subject...who needs the Galle Face Hotel! P.S. they also have a linen and cotton shirt business which I'd encourage all visitors to embrace.

  • Galle Fort

    galle fort sri lanka
One of the most charming spots in Sri Lanka. Galle fort is a remnant of Sri Lanka's past as a post for spice trading and has a mixture of Portuguese, Dutch and English influences. Its charming and infamous Test Cricket Ground sits just outside the walls at the entrance to the Fort. Upon entering, you are whisked away into what has become a boutique and trendy European shopping and dining experience.
