My first experience here was thanks to Reg, Steph, & Lulu for an amazing birthday dinner. The burrata (one of my favorite dishes ever!) was great, especially paired with the tomatoes. Coupled with the costata steak made for an incredible meal - definitely one of my favorite steaks in Singapore. While quite expensive (like $180 or so for 1.1kg), the portion is generous and the quality is superb. Would love to go back for a special occasion, as it is roughly $150 / pax or so.

This is one of the most unique and pleasant eating experiences I've had in Singapore. Basically you dine in complete darkness and have no idea what you're eating (don't worry, they'll ask you for allergies / preferences beforehand). The lack of sight gives a heightened sense of taste and smell, and not knowing what you're eating leaves you free of any preconceived notions of what you like/dislike. There are 3 courses (appetizer, main, and dessert) with 4 dishes each, and all are of very high quality - the chef used to be from Ember @ Hotel 1929, if I'm not mistaken. Price per head gets to roughly $100 SGD with a drink. Definitely one of my top picks for a special dinner.

While not super fancy nor super cheap, Black Angus is one of the default options when I need my steak fix - particularly for their prime rib. The ambience and service isn't the greatest, but the food more than makes up for it. My favorite starters are the Wild Wild West Onion to share, if we are in a group, and the Potato Skins. The prime rib comes with a soup/salad and sides, and the largest 16oz version is seriously big! A mud pie ice cream cake tops the meal off nicely.

While this place has the look and feel of a coffee shop, it has one of the best value-for-money steaks in Singapore. The quality and taste of the US Ribeye here is fantastic, and you'll see every table ordering at least one or two of these babies. The pricing is $12 per 100g, so say $60 for 500g which is a steal considering it also includes a plate of fries/potato wedges and a large serving of the 'heart attack fried rice' that is cooked in all the leftover beef fat/oil. The other dishes like satay etc are pretty good as well, but the main attraction by far is the beef.

Plus, free corkage so you can bring as much wine as you want. What's there not to like?

A favorite of my grandmother, the sharks fin at Thai Village is my favorite type - thick and flavorful with some crab meat thrown in there. I far prefer it to the clear, broth-type versions at most other venues. It comes at a pretty hefty price tag though ($60 for a bowl w/ sharks fin and crab meat).

My Dad's favorite shabu shabu joint, there was a time he would ask us to go literally 3-4 times a week. The US beef here is excellent, though at $20 a plate (100 grams?) it probably isn't the best choice if you are super hungry. They also serve pretty good sushi/sashimi, but other than a dish or two just focus on the awesome beef.

Ask any local about Mellben Seafood and they'll be sure to mention the famous 'Ang Mo Kio Crab Beehoon'. I love bringing visitors here since the dish is less famous than the touristy staples like chili crab and chicken rice, but once they try it they always love it. My favorite dishes here are the crab bee hoon, butter crab, and salted egg pork ribs. Dinner will probably run $40-60 / pax or so

Came here due to Reg's high opinion of it plus a Groupon deal and was not disappointed. The other stuff like sushi was decent, but the main attraction is definitely the yakitori. All of the skewers tasted as good as they looked, especially the beef ones. The lamb rack was very good as well, but given the price you'll probably want to load out on the regular yakitori first.

HaiDiLao is one of the most famous restaurants in China, known for their great hot pot and amazing service. They have been a huge hit in Singapore since opening, with reservations near impossible to make and wait times averaging 1.5 - 2 hours; this is made a bit more bearable by all the free treats available while waiting, such as free snacks and drinks, as well as free professional manicures and a children's playpen. The food quality and service is one of the best in Singapore. Definitely a must-try if you enjoy hot pot. Expect to spend roughly $40-50 SGD / pax.

The Lim Family favorite and a place we've been frequenting from literally before I was born (the waitresses knew me when I was still in my mother's tummy), I probably eat here on average once every week or two. They have a traditional Singaporean seafood menu, but my favorites would be: lala hor fun, fong sha kai, salt baked crab, 3 egg spinach. This is a must-visit any time a relative comes from overseas, and one of the favorites of both local and visiting friends. Price typically comes out to roughly $40-50 SGD / pax.

Call me old fashioned, but I'm quite averse to having Chinese food in the stereotypical 'Chinatown' spots surrounded by tourists. However, despite being located on Smith Street, Xie Lao Song is ridiculously authentic - most of the clientele and staff are very Chinese (and a lot don't even speak much English).

The food here is traditional and great - with the ma la xiao long xia (spicy crayfish) being the main attraction. Of course, being a Sichuan restaurant means they should also have laziji ($16) amongst many other goodies!

Fat Bird is my go-to place when I'm craving something spicy. The Chongqing-style chicken pot isn't your traditional hot-pot where you cook raw meat in a soup, but rather more of a stew where the meat is already cooked and it simmers in a boiling sauce that brings out the awesome flavors. The beef version of the dish is also nice, and other must-tries are the La Zhi Zi (spicy chicken cubes) and Cumin Hot Plate Mutton.

The beer is only like $7-8 for a 750 ml bottle, which is very cheap. They have a good loyalty program and regular UOB credit card promos as well, so dinner usually runs about $30-40 / pax.

Omakase Burger has been creating a huge buzz since it opened in Singapore, apparently being modeled after the famous Shake Shack in New York. The burgers, while very tasty indeed, are a tad bit on the small side compared to other gourmet burgers. The fries, however, are served in generous portions and taste excellent. Given the price ($15-20 for a burger, and probably $30ish for a meal including fries and a drink) it probably isn't something you'll have every day, but it is worth an outing every so often if you're craving a great burger.

My favorite shop for Japanese Ramen. The menu is super simple - a chicken thigh in soup with noodles. You pick the noodle hardness, soup flavor and strength, and any add-ons like seaweed. Free flow hard boiled eggs and some quirky stuff like grind-your-own sesame seeds make the experience quite unique, in addition to the traditional setting. A queue is to be expected around lunch/dinner hours, but definitely worth it!

Ahh, Truffle Fries. Can't get enough of them, and this dish is literally the reason I made this website. PS Cafe is probably the de-facto answer to the 'where should I get truffle fries' question, and it never disappoints. The serving is pretty huge (though I can finish it myself, no problem) and the ambience is always pleasant.

If I want to treat myself (always), pair up with a nice milkshake or ice cream float :)

Not sure why I fell in love with KFC so much after coming back to Singapore compared to the US, but I always look forward to a meal there. My standard order consists of a 2 pc meal (Hot & Crispy, Drumstick + Thigh), upgrading the coleslaw to Cheese Fries, and adding on a Portuguese egg tart (or two). These are arguably my favorite po-tat in Singapore, and though I prefer the old shoestring cheese fries to the current ones, they are pretty good as well.

Bak Kut Teh (pork rib soup) is one of the signature Singaporean dishes that tourists need to try, and locals love having (especially after a heavy night of drinking!). Ya Hua is one of the most famous joints in Singapore and my personal favorite - it helps that it is walking distance from my old office in Tanjong Pagar. The soup is peppery yet light, goes very well with the pork ribs; I also love pouring soup (free flow, by the way) into the rice and eating it together. Typically costs around $10-15 / person including sides and drinks.

While not technically a restaurant, the Gold Class theatre of Golden Village (Katong I12, not sure about the others) has arguably my favorite fries in Singapore. They aren't truffled nor shoestring, but they are done perfectly every time with a ridiculously crispy shell and amazingly soft inside. They're $8++ so it comes out to just under $9.50, which makes it a good deal given the location IMHO. If only we didn't need to buy an expensive movie ticket to order these, I'd be there every day!

Pro tip: if you watch a movie on Mondays - Wednesdays, the tickets are $10 cheaper to $29 each.
